Dear Parents, Students, Friends, and OMS Family,
It is with great sadness that I write this letter. However, I feel that it should be written, as I made a commitment to my students to always tell them the truth about everything.
Last night, April 20th, the Governing Board decided that if Proposition 100 (sales tax) passes, all schools in the district will still remain open. Because of this, the district will either release 3 music teachers or 1.5 music teachers, based on seniority. Because I am the newest music teacher, I am being cut in both cases.
It has been a pleasure serving the OMS community as well as the communities of Longview and Montecito. I think that the bands at OMS have been taken to new heights and I hope that, if the band program still exists next year, our students will continue to push themselves and take themselves to new and exciting level of music making.
On May 13th, 2010, the process of packing up will begin. There is a lot to do between then and the end of school. Your students may be asking to stay after-school more frequently to help pack, inventory instruments and music, clean, and more. I urge you to allow them to stay and help in this capacity. Band means a lot to every student in the program--I would like for them to be able to take ownership, especially since I am being let go.
If you have any questions regarding my exit or the budget in general, please call (602) 707-2410.
Musically Yours,
Kevin R. Eberle
